The goal of airport security is to protect the aircraft, passengers and crew from harm or violence as well as supporting national counter terrorism and security policy. To this end, airports utilize several techniques to minimize dangers to the flying public.
The techniques to protect the flying public begin when you first purchase an airline ticket. If risk factors are detected, you are automatically notated to require extra screening as you pass through security.
Upon arrival at the airport, the airport security apparatus is functioning. Plain clothes and uniformed officers mingle near the check-in counter to detect anything out of the ordinary. Security questions are asked when you check in and you may be randomly ask to submit your checked bags for xraying. You may also be randomly selected for secondary screening at this time as well.
As you make your way to the departure gates, you will pass through the security screening area. Here all passengers will have their carry on baggage checked by X-ray and possible bomb detection sensors. All passengers will also be required to walk through the metal detector.
Those selected for secondary screening will be required to go through additional screening procedures and that may include being xrayed before they are allowed to board the aircraft. All of this is done to ensure that the flight is safe.
The security work doesn’t stop at the security screening area. It continues in the departure area. Security officers are vigilant for possible security violators and some passengers may be selected for additional screening before being allowed to board their aircraft.
